Fri Oct 11 16:07:23 UTC 2024: ## South Korean Author Han Kang Wins Nobel Prize in Literature
**STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN** – South Korean author Han Kang has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming the first writer from her country to win the prestigious award. The Swedish Academy recognized Han for her “intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.”
The 53-year-old author, known for her powerful and often disturbing narratives, made her literary debut with a collection of short stories in 1995. Her breakthrough came with “The Vegetarian,” a novel that won the Man Booker International Prize in 2016 and follows a young woman who chooses to live a “plant-like” existence after experiencing horrific nightmares about human cruelty.
The Swedish Academy praised Han’s “unique awareness of the connections between body and soul, the living and the dead.” They described her work as “poetic and experimental,” making her an “innovator in contemporary prose.”
Han’s novels have been translated into numerous languages, including English, and explore themes of trauma, violence, and the human condition. One of her most critically acclaimed works, “Human Acts,” reflects on the 1980 Gwangju Uprising, a bloody event in South Korea’s history.
The announcement of Han’s Nobel Prize has been met with widespread celebration in South Korea. President Yoon Suk Yeol described it as a “great achievement in the history of Korean literature” and a “national occasion.” Her books have rocketed to the top of South Korea’s bestseller lists, with thousands of copies sold in the hours following the announcement.
The Nobel Prize in Literature is awarded annually to an author who has produced “the most outstanding work in the ideal direction” in the field of literature. Han is the 18th woman to win the prize since its inception in 1901.
She will receive a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor ($1 million) and will be formally presented with the Nobel Prize at a ceremony in Stockholm on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
