Fri Oct 11 13:46:45 UTC 2024: ## Tesla Unveils Vision of a Driverless Future, But Experts Remain Skeptical
**Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Thursday unveiled his vision of a future filled with self-driving cars, robot companions, and transformed cities, promising the arrival of this “age of abundance” within a few years.** The ambitious announcement, presented at a glitzy event in California, included the designs for Tesla’s robotaxis, sleek metallic vehicles without steering wheels, and a Robovan for larger groups.
Musk, known for his bold predictions, admitted that he tends to be “a little optimistic with time frames.” He had previously promised robotaxis just a year away five years ago. The event, livestreamed to millions, featured a fleet of 50 self-driving vehicles cruising around the studio lot.
Musk claims that Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature, currently offered as an $8,000 option, will soon enable cars to operate without human intervention in states like California and Texas. He also unveiled the Cybercab, a driverless car specifically designed for passengers, slated for production by 2026.
The robotaxis, according to Musk, will not only provide ride-sharing services but also offer Tesla owners the ability to rent out their vehicles for rides when not in use. This would compete with ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft, as well as other driverless offerings from companies like Waymo.
However, experts remain skeptical of Tesla’s ambitious timeline and the company’s claims about the safety of its FSD system. Tech journalist Kara Swisher, who called the robovan “a lovely toaster on wheels,” pointed out that Waymo has already deployed driverless vehicles in San Francisco, while Tesla continues to make promises.
Independent testing has found that drivers need to take control of Tesla’s FSD-equipped cars every 13 miles on average, raising concerns about the technology’s maturity. Gene Munster, managing partner at Deepwater Asset Management, estimates that it will take at least two years to perfect the technology and another two to three years for regulatory approval.
While Musk has stated that Tesla’s FSD system is safer than human drivers, he has also admitted to being “overly optimistic” with his previous predictions. The company’s history of delayed production timelines, including the Cybertruck pickup and the electric semi-truck, further fuels skepticism.
While the vision of a driverless future is enticing, the reality may be further off than Musk’s optimistic projections. The true test will be in the company’s ability to deliver on its promises and overcome the numerous technical and regulatory hurdles ahead.
