The organization, known for its dedication to a world without nuclear weapons, was recognized for its unwavering work in promoting peace and hope through their personal experiences of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Nihon Hidankyo, stating that “despite the physical suffering and haunting memories, the Japanese organization has, through its experiences, instilled hope and peace in the world.” They further emphasized that the award honors the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Nihon Hidankyo was established by survivors of the 1945 bombings to advocate for the abolition of nuclear weapons and promote peace. The organization has been actively involved in promoting nuclear disarmament and raising awareness about the devastating effects of nuclear weapons.
The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded annually to individuals or organizations “who have done the most to promote fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.” This year, the committee received 197 individual and 89 organization nominations for the prize.
