Thu Oct 10 16:50:30 UTC 2024: ## Travel Industry Soars, But Over-Tourism Raises Concerns
The travel industry has experienced a remarkable rebound following the COVID-19 pandemic, exceeding initial expectations. Despite the cost-of-living crisis, the desire for vacations remains strong, driving demand to record highs.
However, this booming business is causing challenges, with overtourism becoming a growing concern in popular destinations. Locals in places like the Canary Islands and Venice are expressing frustration over the influx of visitors. Even Greece, heavily reliant on tourism, has imposed a €20 tax on cruise passengers visiting overcrowded islands like Mykonos and Santorini. In some areas, tourists now outnumber locals by a staggering 100 to 1.
While overtourism has made headlines, travel companies argue that the issue is localized, with certain regions experiencing a greater impact than others. This week, Greece hosts the UK travel industry’s leading event, Abta’s travel convention, in the relatively unknown southwestern Peloponnese, highlighting their continued focus on attracting visitors.
Despite the overtourism concerns, consumer confidence in travel remains high, with travelers willing to pay more for their vacations. This is a significant shift from the cautious mood of the post-pandemic summit in 2022, which was described as a “survivor’s celebration”.
The aviation industry has also seen substantial growth, with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) reporting a 10% increase in passengers this August compared to last year.
However, there are challenges ahead. The European Union’s long-awaited Entry-Exit System (EES), requiring biometric registration for all visitors, is set to launch in November but may face delays. Additionally, a €7 visa fee under the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is expected within the next year.
For the UK travel industry, post-Brexit border regulations continue to cause difficulties, particularly with a shortage of seasonal workers in the EU. Youth mobility schemes are being considered to address this issue.
Despite these challenges, the travel industry is enjoying sustained growth. As it navigates this boom, it is facing pressure to balance the demand for travel with the need for responsible and sustainable tourism practices.
