Thu Oct 10 16:01:25 UTC 2024: ## Over 120 Doctors Resign in Solidarity with Protesting Juniors at RG Kar Hospital

**Kolkata, India:** In a dramatic escalation of protests over the rape-murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, over 120 senior doctors have submitted mass resignation letters, joining the juniors in their demand for justice and safer working conditions.

The senior doctors, citing the deteriorating health of their colleagues who are on a fast-unto-death, expressed their inability to provide quality patient care in the current environment. This marks the second day of mass resignations, with 50 senior doctors from the same hospital already tendering their resignations on Tuesday.

The junior doctors, now in their fifth day of the hunger strike, are demanding justice for the deceased doctor and a guarantee of workplace safety. Their protest has been ongoing since the gruesome discovery of the doctor’s body on August 9th within the hospital premises.

In response to the growing pressure, the West Bengal government has taken several steps, including the removal of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, Deputy Commissioner (North) Abhishek Gupta, Director of Medical Education (DME) Kaustav Nayak, and Director of Health Services (DHS) Debashis Halder.

The CBI is currently investigating the rape-murder case. The mass resignations are seen as a strong statement of solidarity and a desperate plea for change to ensure the safety and well-being of medical professionals in the state.
