Thu Oct 10 14:56:35 UTC 2024: ## South Korean Author Han Kang Wins Nobel Prize in Literature

**STOCKHOLM, Sweden** – South Korean author Han Kang (53) has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature, making her the first writer from her country to receive the prestigious honor. The Nobel Committee cited her “intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.”

Han Kang’s work often explores the interconnectedness of body and soul, the living and the dead, and the resilience of individuals in the face of adversity. Her writing is characterized by a unique blend of poetry and experimental prose, making her a trailblazer in contemporary literature.

The Nobel Committee praised Han’s “physical empathy for the vulnerable, often female lives” of her characters. Her novel “The Vegetarian,” which won the International Booker Prize in 2016, explores a woman’s decision to stop eating meat and the devastating consequences that follow. This novel, along with other works like “Human Acts” and “The White Book,” delve into themes of trauma, identity, and the human condition.

“Human Acts,” based on the real-life killing of pro-democracy protesters in Han’s hometown of Gwangju in 1980, is considered “witness literature” by the Nobel Committee. The novel offers a powerful and moving testament to the enduring impact of historical events on individuals and communities.

Han Kang’s win comes at a time of growing global recognition for South Korean culture. The success of films like “Parasite” and the TV series “Squid Game,” as well as the worldwide popularity of K-pop groups like BTS and BLACKPINK, have catapulted Korean arts and entertainment onto the international stage.

The Nobel Prize in Literature has faced criticism for its focus on European and North American writers, and its historical lack of gender diversity. However, recent years have seen a shift towards recognizing more global and diverse voices, with Han Kang’s win continuing this trend.

Han Kang will receive the 11 million-krona ($1.1 million) award, a diploma, and a gold medal at the Nobel Prize ceremony on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
