Tue Oct 08 13:45:20 UTC 2024: ## West Bengal: Violence Erupts After 9-Year-Old Girl’s Body Found, TMC Leader Faces Public Anger

**Jaynagar, West Bengal:** Tension and violence gripped the Mahishamari area of Jaynagar in West Bengal following the discovery of the body of a 9-year-old girl. On Tuesday, residents took to the streets, demanding justice for the victim and holding the local authorities responsible for the lack of safety.

The situation escalated when a group of villagers, carrying the girl’s body, marched towards the Mahishamari police station. They were stopped by police, leading to a confrontation that quickly turned violent. Protesters attacked a police vehicle, throwing stones and wielding bamboo sticks.

Police officers, including the SDPO of Baruipur, were met with hostility. The crowd attempted to snatch the keys to the police vehicle and pull officers out. Police reinforcements and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel were deployed to control the situation.

The violence continued when protesters attempted to obstruct the vehicle carrying a female police officer who had fallen ill.

Despite the anger directed at the police, protesters claimed their outrage was aimed at “lawless elements” in the village, alleging they were being protected by the authorities. They accused the police of mishandling the protests and blamed them for escalating the situation.

While the police assured the public that they will identify the perpetrators of the violence against their vehicle and take legal action, the situation remains volatile.

The incident has sparked further anger towards the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). The local MP and TMC leader, Pratima Mandal, was met with protests when she visited the victim’s family. She expressed her condolences and called for the perpetrators to be punished but was met with hostility by the crowd.

The incident highlights the growing frustration and anger among residents over safety concerns and lack of action by authorities. It remains to be seen how the police and the state government will address the demands for justice and prevent further escalation of the situation.
