Tue Oct 08 21:06:26 UTC 2024: ## Volvo Double-Downs on Electric Future While Pushing for EU’s 2035 ICE Ban
Despite scaling back its own initial ambition of going fully electric by 2030, Volvo is leading a coalition of companies urging the European Union to stick to its 2035 ban on new cars with combustion engines (ICE). Joining the call are major names like Rivian, Uber, and IKEA.
Volvo CEO Jim Rowan argues that electrification is the most efficient way to reduce emissions in the automotive industry and insists on a firm ban, even as some European countries push for exceptions for vehicles running on synthetic fuels.
The company itself has already moved decisively towards electrification, ending diesel production in March and projecting plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles to represent 90-100% of sales by 2030.
However, the ban’s fate remains uncertain. While some companies like Porsche and Italy’s government have expressed concerns about the 2035 deadline, the ban’s implications for the global automotive industry are significant. If a car manufacturer cannot sell its ICE vehicles in Europe, it may not achieve the necessary scale to continue production globally, potentially leading to the death of popular models.
Volvo’s decision to double down on electrification despite scaling back its own deadline, coupled with the lobbying efforts for a firm EU ban, highlights the increasingly polarized landscape surrounding the future of ICE vehicles.
