**Pune, India:** In a significant development in Maharashtra’s political landscape, Deputy Chief Minister and NCP (AP) President Ajit Pawar is expected to contest the upcoming state elections from the Shirur Assembly segment, abandoning his traditional stronghold of Baramati.
This news comes amidst a flurry of activity as political parties across the state gear up for the elections. While all parties are currently conducting interviews with potential candidates, the BJP has reportedly not interviewed any aspirants for the Shirur seat, suggesting the constituency may be allotted to the NCP (AP).
Ajit Pawar’s decision to shift constituencies is a strategic move. He has held the Baramati seat since 1991, winning with significant margins. However, recent developments in the region seem to have prompted the change.
The current Shirur MLA, Ashok Pawar, belongs to the NCP (SP) faction led by Sharad Pawar. However, following the split in the NCP in July 2023, all MLAs from Pune district joined Ajit Pawar’s NCP (AP). Despite this, Ashok Pawar has remained loyal to Sharad Pawar.
With Ajit Pawar likely to contest from Shirur, it raises questions about the candidates both major alliances, the Maha Yuti and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), will field from the Baramati seat.
This development has stirred the political pot in Maharashtra, prompting much speculation about the upcoming elections and the potential outcomes.
