Tue Oct 08 19:11:21 UTC 2024: ## India’s 2036 Olympic Bid Stalled by Internal Disputes

**New Delhi, India** – India’s bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics is facing serious challenges due to internal disputes within the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s declaration last year of India’s strong ambition to host the Games, talks with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have “completely stalled”, according to sources.

The primary obstacle, revealed in a letter from IOA president PT Usha, is the ongoing conflict over the appointment of a Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Usha’s recommendation of seasoned sports administrator Raghuram Iyer, supported by the Nomination Committee, has been met with resistance from the Executive Council.

Council members cite concerns about Usha’s “arbitrary” decision-making and the proposed “high salary package” for the CEO. This impasse has resulted in numerous key IOA meetings ending without agreement, further jeopardizing India’s bid.

The IOC has publicly expressed concerns over the IOA’s internal governance issues, stating that the association is “fully responsible” for the current situation. While the IOC did not directly comment on the stalled talks, it emphasized that the IOA must address its internal conflicts urgently.

The CEO position is critical for India’s bid, as they would be a key figure in forming the bid committee, which will engage with IOC members and advocate for India’s hosting rights.

The situation raises serious questions about the future of India’s 2036 Olympic bid. While the Gujarat government has already announced infrastructure projects in Ahmedabad worth Rs 6,000 crore, the absence of a unified and functional IOA is hindering progress.

With other countries, including Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Hungary, and Indonesia, also vying for the 2036 Games, time is of the essence for India to resolve its internal disputes and demonstrate its readiness to host the world’s largest sporting event.
