**KOLLAM:** Renowned Malayalam actor T P Madhavan passed away on Wednesday morning at the age of 88. He was under treatment for stomach ailments at a private hospital in Kollam. Madhavan, a veteran of over 600 films, was known for his versatility and had played diverse roles throughout his career.
He was the first general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) and had a long and illustrious career in the industry. After leaving the film world, he had resided in Gandhi Bhavan in Pathanapuram, Kollam, for the past nine years. A dedicated room was allotted to him, where he was surrounded by mementos and statues from his career, including awards like the Ramu Karyat and Prem Nazeer awards.
Born in Thiruvananthapuram, Madhavan was the nephew of noted dramatist T N Gopinathan Nair and grandson of eminent linguist P K Narayana Pillai. His father, N P Pillai, was a renowned lecturer and Dean at Kerala University. Madhavan himself pursued a post-graduate degree in Sociology from Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar University, formerly Agra University.
He had a brief stint in the Indian Army but was forced to withdraw due to a hand fracture. He then worked for an English newspaper in Bombay and later started an advertising agency in Bangalore. His film debut was in 1975 with the movie “Raagam.”
Madhavan was married to Sudha, but the marriage ended in divorce. He is survived by his son, renowned Bollywood director Raja Krishna Menon, and daughter Devika. He had left his family when his son was just two and a half years old to pursue his passion for cinema.
His funeral will be held at Shanthikavadam in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday. The Malayalam film industry mourns the loss of this legendary actor and remembers his significant contributions to the world of cinema.
