The recent Jammu & Kashmir Assembly elections saw significant changes in the political landscape. Various parties fielded their candidates in different constituencies.
**Omar Abdullah, Vice President of National Conference (NC), won the Budgam assembly seat by defeating PDP’s Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi by over 18,000 votes. He also won in Ganderbal with a margin of over 10,000 votes.**
**The biggest victory in J&K went to BJP’s Devendra Singh Rana, who won the Nagrota seat by a whopping 30,472 votes.** Meanwhile, the closest victory was recorded by PDP candidate Rafiq Ahmad Naik who won by a mere 460 votes.
The last assembly elections in the state were held in November-December 2014, which saw the formation of a coalition government between the Jammu & Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as the Chief Minister. Following the death of Sayeed in 2016, Mehbooba Mufti took over as the Chief Minister.
In 2019, Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu & Kashmir, was revoked, and the state was reorganized into the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh under the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act, which came into effect on October 31, 2019.
The 2024 elections have significantly reshaped the political dynamics of Jammu & Kashmir, with key victories by both the NC and the BJP. The results will undoubtedly have long-lasting consequences for the region’s future.
