**Karaj, Iran (October 7, 2024) –** The Iranian judiciary has executed nine prisoners, including a woman named Leila Ghaemi, in Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj.
Leila Ghaemi, a mother of one from Tehran, was convicted of premeditated murder and sentenced to death eight years ago. She was transferred from Qarchak Varamin Prison to Ghezel Hesar Prison for the execution on October 2nd.
The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, an independent organization covering human rights violations in Kurdistan and across Iran, reported the executions. According to Hengaw, eight other prisoners, including two Afghan nationals, were also executed on the same day.
The executions have drawn condemnation from human rights groups who continue to criticize Iran’s use of the death penalty, which they deem a violation of international human rights law.
