**Chennai, India** – The Indian Air Force (IAF) celebrated its 92nd anniversary on October 8th, 2023, with a grand airshow at Marina Beach in Chennai. The event, themed “Bharatiya Vayusena: Saksham, Sashakt aur Aatmnirbhar” (Potent, Powerful, and Self-Reliant), highlighted the IAF’s commitment to self-reliance and modernization, aligning with the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) initiative.
The airshow, which took place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., showcased some of the IAF’s most advanced fighter jets, including:
* **Dassault Rafale:** This twin-jet combat aircraft, designed by France’s Dassault Aviation, is widely considered one of the best fighter jets in the world. India currently has 36 Rafales in its arsenal, with the first squadron deployed at Ambala Air Force Station.
* **Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA):** Developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the Tejas is a single-seat, single-engine, supersonic fighter aircraft. It represents a significant milestone in India’s “Make in India” campaign and is one of the country’s most advanced jets.
* **Sukhoi Su-30MKI:** This multi-role combat aircraft, manufactured by HAL in collaboration with Russia’s Sukhoi Design Bureau, is a mainstay of the IAF’s fleet. The IAF currently operates over 300 units of this aircraft, which can carry the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.
* **MiG-21:** Although nicknamed the “Flying Coffin,” the MiG-21 is one of the most produced and widely sold fighter jets globally. The IAF has been operating this single-seat aircraft for over 60 years and has continued to upgrade it to keep pace with modern technology.
* **Mirage-2000:** This single-engine, fourth-generation fighter jet, first flown in 1978, is in service with several countries, including India. It features multiple variants and is known for its versatility and capabilities.
