The nine-day festival of Navratri commenced on October 3, with the five-day Durga Puja celebrations starting on October 9. This year, the most auspicious days of Maha Ashtami and Maha Navami fall on October 11 and 12, respectively.
Durga Puja commemorates the victory of good over evil, represented by Goddess Durga’s triumph over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. The festival also celebrates her homecoming to the mortal realm.
Maha Ashtami, the most significant day of Durga Puja, marks the worship of Maa Mahagauri, the embodiment of purity and serenity. In the Bengali community, Maa Chamunda is worshipped, her appearance signifying the defeat of evil forces. Devotees wake up early on Ashtami to perform rituals, including a special bath (Mahasnan) and the Shodashopachar Puja, where nine pots are installed to invoke the nine forms of Maa Durga.
The day also includes the Kanya Puja, where young unmarried girls are worshipped as divine avatars of Maa Durga. This ritual, which includes offering food and gifts to the girls, is believed to bring blessings.
Maha Navami marks the final victory of Goddess Durga, celebrated as Mahishasuramardhini, or ‘She Who Killed Mahishasura’. The day celebrates the continued presence of the Goddess among her devotees before her departure. Kanya Pujan is also observed on this day, welcoming young unmarried girls into homes to seek their blessings.
Durga Puja is filled with cultural vibrancy, prayers, and rituals, culminating in the celebration of the divine victory over evil. The festivities provide a vibrant backdrop for communities to come together and partake in the joy and spirit of the festival.
