**London, Ontario** – The London Ontario Malayali Association (LOMA) hosted a magnificent Onam celebration, “Thiruvonam Madhuram 2024,” on September 28th, at the Saunders School Auditorium. The event was a vibrant tapestry of tradition, culture, and community spirit, drawing over 850 attendees.
The day commenced with a captivating “Thiruvathira” dance competition and a lively “Maaveli and Crew” contest. The highlight was a sumptuous Onam Sadhya served by Olive Garden Restaurant, treating guests to a traditional Kerala feast.
A mesmerizing Chenda Mela performance by “Kairali London” set the stage for a diverse cultural program. A captivating play presented by a group of artists led by Sudhakaran Mas from Toronto, explored contemporary issues with insightful acting.
The event was graced by dignitaries including MP Lianne Rood, MP Peter Fragiskatos, MP Lindsay Mathisen, MPP Teresa Armstrong, Councillors Jerry Pribil, Susan Stevenson, and Corin Rahman. Prominent figures from the London administration were also present.
The evening was further enlivened by a spectrum of performances. The stage was abuzz with talent, featuring classical, semi-classical, cinematic, breakdance, and traditional “kaikotikkali” performances by renowned dance groups like Noopura Dance School, Kalaalaya Academy, Varna Group, Kilikootam Lets Dance, Summer Side Girls, and Team Folks 49. LOMA families contributed to the joyous atmosphere with their renditions of Onam songs and a special dance tribute to Wayanad.
The celebration culminated in the “Shriman Shrimati” and “Mr. and Mrs.” contests. LOMA members, with generous sponsorships from JJ Home Renovation, One Dental, Abidos Academy, BT Performance, Menon Associates, Mint Leaves & Real Taste, Trident, Giver Thampi, Emmanuel Chimmini Kaad, Kizhakan Thattukada, Comfort Canada, and Sar Group, bestowed awards and tokens of appreciation on the winners.
