Tue Oct 08 23:42:54 UTC 2024: ## AI Pioneers Win Nobel Prize in Physics

**Stockholm, October 8:** John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton have been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics for their groundbreaking theoretical contributions to machine learning using artificial neural networks.

The Nobel Committee in Stockholm announced the prestigious award, acknowledging the duo’s profound impact on the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Hinton, often hailed as the “godfather of AI,” is a Canadian-British citizen currently working at the University of Toronto. Hopfield, an American citizen, is affiliated with Princeton University in New Jersey. Both scientists have earned recognition for their work in the field of neural networks.

Hopfield’s groundbreaking research focused on creating a framework capable of storing and retrieving information. His creation, the Hopfield network, proved instrumental in revolutionizing machine learning. Hinton, on the other hand, developed a method allowing machines to independently identify patterns in data, further fueling the advancements in AI.

Their combined work laid the foundation for the development of sophisticated machine learning systems, which have since found applications in diverse fields like healthcare, finance, and research.

“Artificial neural networks are being used in various ways in physics, and their research has the potential to contribute to the development of new materials,” stated Ellen Moers, the head of the Nobel Committee.

This Nobel Prize win marks a significant milestone in the recognition of AI as a critical field of scientific inquiry.
