Tue Oct 08 00:41:52 UTC 2024: ## Veteran Airline Leader Takes Helm at IATA Amidst Global Tensions

Willie Walsh, a veteran of the airline industry with a career spanning over 40 years, has assumed the role of Director General at the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Walsh, deeply familiar with IATA having previously served on its Board of Governors, brings a wealth of experience to the position. He previously led Aer Lingus, British Airways, and International Airlines Group (IAG).

His appointment comes at a time of heightened global tensions, prompting IATA to issue a strong call for the protection of civil aviation during conflicts. “Civil aviation does not take sides in political conflicts,” emphasizes Walsh. He highlights the crucial role of aviation in connecting people and delivering goods, and underscores the importance of upholding international legal obligations to safeguard civilian air travel.

IATA, echoing the principles of the Chicago Convention signed in 1944, urges all parties involved in conflicts to refrain from targeting civilian aircraft, airports, and air navigation infrastructure. They emphasize that the line between military and civilian aviation must not be blurred, as it would have devastating consequences for innocent populations and humanitarian aid efforts.

The organization reiterates the fundamental obligations of states under international law to protect civil aircraft and passengers, and to coordinate any activities that could pose a threat to civil aviation. IATA stresses that these rules are non-negotiable and must be respected, even during times of intense conflict.

As the world strives for peace, IATA remains committed to supporting efforts to connect people and goods through aviation. They call upon combatants to adhere to the rules of conflict and humanitarian assistance as outlined in international law, ensuring the safety and security of civil aviation in the face of global challenges.
