**New Delhi, India:** Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has expressed his hope for increased Indian tourism to the archipelago nation, highlighting its importance as a major source market for the Maldives. During a visit to India this week, President Muizzu held extensive talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing the centuries-old ties between the two countries and the potential for a stronger partnership.

This visit comes after a period of strained relations following a “Boycott Maldives” campaign earlier this year. The campaign, fueled by alleged anti-India remarks by some Maldivian officials, saw many Indians, including celebrities, calling for a shift in tourist destinations from the Maldives to other scenic locales like Lakshadweep.

President Muizzu, however, emphasized the strong people-to-people connections between the two countries, highlighting the presence of a large Indian community contributing to the Maldives’ development. He also stressed the importance of a democratic and prosperous Maldives for regional peace and stability, acknowledging India’s role as a key partner in maritime security.

Both leaders agreed to enhance efforts to boost tourism through marketing campaigns and collaboration, while also exploring a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership. This new framework aims to strengthen bilateral ties, with a focus on economic cooperation and maritime security.

President Muizzu expressed his commitment to strengthening cooperation with India across various areas, including high-level exchanges to foster deeper understanding and friendship. He also extended an invitation to Prime Minister Modi to visit the Maldives next year to commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

The Maldivian President also expressed his desire to conclude a free trade agreement with India, aiming to unlock the full economic potential between the two countries and attract more Indian investments in tourism and other sectors.

This visit marks a significant step towards resetting ties between the two countries, with both leaders demonstrating their commitment to fostering a stronger and more comprehensive partnership.
