Tue Oct 08 12:12:13 UTC 2024: ## Maldivian President Visits Taj Mahal Amidst Warming Ties with India
**Agra, India -** Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu and his wife, First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, visited the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra on Tuesday, as part of the President’s five-day state visit to India. The visit comes amidst a recent thaw in relations between the two countries, following a period of tension.
President Muizzu, who arrived in India on October 6th, has already held meetings with Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During these meetings, both leaders expressed their commitment to deepening the historical relationship between the two nations.
The President’s visit to the Taj Mahal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, signifies the importance of cultural exchange and shared heritage between India and Maldives.
The visit also comes on the heels of a series of collaborations announced by both countries, including the development of a state-of-the-art commercial port at Thilafushi island and the exploration of joint ventures for trans-shipment facilities and bunkering services. Both nations also agreed to work together on developing airports in the Maldives.
President Muizzu expressed his gratitude to India for its recent financial assistance and acknowledged India’s consistent role as a reliable partner for the Maldives in times of need.
This visit marks the second time President Muizzu has visited India this year, following his attendance at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony in June. His visit also signifies a departure from the previous practice of Maldivian Presidents prioritizing India as their first official overseas trip.
The visit underscores the renewed commitment of both countries to strengthen their bilateral ties and work collaboratively on areas of mutual interest.
