Mon Oct 07 23:13:39 UTC 2024: ## CBI Alleges Cover-Up Attempt in RG Kar Medical College Doctor’s Murder Case
**Kolkata:** The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has alleged that the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandeep Ghosh, and former officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mandal, tried to cover up the murder of a junior doctor in August 2023. According to the CBI, the accused attempted to portray the murder, which also involved alleged rape, as a suicide.
The CBI, seeking an extension of the judicial custody of Ghosh and Mandal, made these accusations in the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) in Sealdah on Friday. The duo was arrested on September 14th in connection with the rape and murder case. Ghosh had been arrested earlier on September 2nd by the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) along with three others for alleged financial irregularities and corruption at RG Kar.
The CBI, in its statement to the court, revealed that the investigating team had examined CCTV footage from Tala Police Station and data from the mobile phones of the two accused. “The data from DVR and hard disks of mobile phones of both accused as well as the CCTV footage of PS Tala have been received from CFSL (Kolkata) and examined. Several calls point to the accused persons’ intention to suppress the incident,” said the CBI.
The CBI, which is investigating two aspects of the case – the alleged rape and murder and the allegations of financial irregularities – stated that it is looking into a possible conspiracy behind the murder and is actively investigating attempts to destroy evidence and portray the incident as a suicide.
The CBI further revealed that Ghosh and Mandal were interrogated between October 1st and 3rd inside Presidency Jail. However, the accused refused to cooperate and provided evasive answers. The CBI emphasized the need to verify their statements further.
The agency also requested the court to grant them permission to verify phone calls and data pertaining to other witnesses and individuals who were in contact with Ghosh and Mandal. The court granted the CBI’s request and extended the judicial custody of both accused for 14 days.
In a separate development, Yasin Malik, the founder of JKLF-Y, was sentenced to life imprisonment for terror funding and the organization was banned for 5 years by a UAPA court. Malik, who had formed JKLF-Y in 1988, had been accused of killing Indian Air Force personnel in 1990.
