Tue Oct 08 15:01:38 UTC 2024: ## Jammu and Kashmir Elections: Strict Enforcement of Model Code of Conduct Results in Seizures and Suspensions

**Jammu, September 30, 2024:** The Jammu and Kashmir State Election Commission has taken strict action against violations of the Model Code of Conduct during the recent assembly elections. A total of 23 government officials were suspended and Rs 130 crore were seized by enforcement agencies.

The police department led the seizure efforts, confiscating Rs 107.50 crore, followed by the Central Goods and Services Tax Department (Rs 9.88 crore) and the State Goods and Services Tax Department (Rs 8.03 crore). Other agencies involved in the seizures include the Narcotics Control Bureau, the Income Tax Department, and the State Excise Department.

In addition to suspensions, 20 employees were transferred from their current positions after complaints of bias towards political parties were lodged against them. Six contractual and ad hoc employees were also removed for violating the code.

The commission granted 7,088 permissions to political parties and candidates for various election-related activities, including rallies, processions, and campaigning materials.

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of J&K, PK Pole, stated that out of 1263 reported MCC violations, 600 have been resolved with appropriate action taken. Investigations are ongoing for 364 cases, and 115 notices remain outstanding against candidates, political parties, and media outlets.

Enforcement agencies have also registered 32 FIRs related to the illegal transportation of drugs, cash, and liquor.

This strong enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct demonstrates the commission’s commitment to ensuring free and fair elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
