Mon Oct 07 23:42:00 UTC 2024: ## Indonesia Hosts South-South Exchange to Strengthen REDD+ Efforts

**Jakarta, Indonesia -** Indonesia recently hosted the South-South Exchange 2024 (SSE 2024) on September 30, bringing together delegates from various countries to discuss and collaborate on reducing deforestation and forest degradation (FOLU). The event, organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aimed to accelerate efforts to implement the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) programs through knowledge sharing and partnership building.

Delegates from Brazil, Ecuador, Cambodia, Costa Rica, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Indonesia participated in the event, focusing on enhancing cooperation in managing REDD+ initiatives under Results-Based Payments (RBP) through the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and other climate financing schemes.

Indonesia highlighted its success in implementing REDD+ at both national and sub-national levels, showcasing four key projects:

* **REDD+ RBP Program:** Secured $103.78 million from the GCF between 2014 and 2016, contributing to the country’s commitment to emission reduction.
* **Indonesia-Norway Bilateral Cooperation:** Targeting a reduction of 31.7 million tons of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e) from 2016 to 2019, funded by $156 million.
* **FCPF Carbon Fund in East Kalimantan:** Aims to reduce 22 million tCO2e by 2024, with a value of $110 million.
* **BioCF-ISFL in Jambi Province:** A project worth $70 million, targeting a reduction of 14 million tCO2e by 2025.

The event emphasized the need for greater access to climate finance for tropical forest countries to meet their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets. Discussions also highlighted the need for flexible instruments to streamline the implementation of REDD+ RBP funding.

Dr. Aretha Aprilia, Head of the Environment Unit at UNDP Indonesia, reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to supporting Indonesia’s efforts in climate action through innovative financing, capacity building, and policies aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “Through platforms like SSE 2024, climate action becomes stronger and more tangible,” she stated.
