Tue Oct 08 18:00:52 UTC 2024: ## Indian Air Force Celebrates 92nd Anniversary with Grand Air Show
**Chennai, October 8, 2024:** The Indian Air Force (IAF) is celebrating its 92nd anniversary today, marking the establishment of the air arm on October 8, 1932. The IAF is showcasing its might and prowess with a grand air show and parade at the Tambaram base in Chennai.
The air show features a spectacular display of aerial maneuvers by powerful fighter jets and helicopters, promising an unforgettable experience for the spectators. The IAF, the world’s fourth largest air force, plays a vital role in India’s defense, providing support during conflicts and assisting with rescue operations during natural disasters. The IAF also participates in peacekeeping missions around the globe and evacuates Indian citizens during emergencies.
On this special day, the IAF extended its heartfelt greetings to all air warriors, DSC personnel, civilians, and their families. The theme of the celebrations is “Saksham, Sashakta, Aatmanirbhar” (capable, empowered, self-reliant), highlighting the IAF’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s airspace.
The IAF’s motto, “Nabha: Sprushyam Diptam,” derived from the Bhagavad Gita, embodies its pursuit of excellence. Prior to India’s independence, the air force was known as the Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF) and played a significant role during World War II.
The first air force squadron was established on April 1, 1933, comprising six trained officers and 19 airmen. After independence, the “Royal” prefix was removed, and the IAF became the Indian Air Force as we know it today.
The IAF flag, distinct from its emblem, is blue with the national flag in the top left corner and a circle incorporating the colors of the national flag in the center. It was adopted in 1951.
