Tue Oct 08 14:34:34 UTC 2024: ## Team India Suffers Shocking Defeat Against New Zealand in Women’s T20 World Cup

**Cape Town, South Africa:** India’s campaign at the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 got off to a disastrous start with a 58-run defeat against New Zealand in the opening match.

Despite winning the toss and opting to field first, India’s bowlers failed to contain New Zealand’s batting lineup. The Kiwis, powered by a quickfire knock of 57 by Sophie Devine, set a challenging target of 161 runs.

India’s chase was marred by early wickets, with star batters Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma losing their wickets in the powerplay. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur tried to stem the tide with a valiant effort, but she too fell short. The middle order crumbled under pressure, and India eventually folded for 102 in 19 overs.

Harmanpreet, acknowledging the team’s poor performance, said, “We didn’t play our best cricket today. We’ll have to look back and see where we need to improve. Every game is crucial, and we need to play our best cricket. We created chances to turn the game around, but they played better cricket, there’s no doubt. You can’t make these mistakes at this stage. We’ve chased 160-170 successfully many times. But those extra 10-15 runs on this pitch were too many. At one stage, the way they started, I thought they would set a target of 180.”

India will now face their arch-rivals Pakistan in their next match on Sunday, August 6th. The team needs to regroup and deliver a strong performance in the remaining matches if they are to have any chance of making it to the knockout stages.
