Mon Oct 07 23:22:15 UTC 2024: ## Hurricane Milton Strengthens to Category 5, Prompts Mass Evacuations in Florida

**TAMPA, FL** – Hurricane Milton has rapidly intensified into a powerful Category 5 storm with winds of 180 mph, prompting mandatory evacuations along Florida’s west coast as residents brace for life-threatening impacts. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued urgent warnings, urging residents to follow local officials’ instructions and evacuate if told to do so.

Milton, now the strongest Atlantic hurricane in 5 years, is expected to make landfall on the Florida Peninsula by Wednesday. The storm is bringing with it the threat of a potentially deadly storm surge that could reach up to 15 feet in some areas, including Tampa Bay.

Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for 51 counties, and President Joe Biden has approved a pre-landfall emergency declaration, authorizing federal assistance for disaster relief efforts.

Hurricane and storm surge warnings have been issued along Florida’s Gulf Coast, from Flamingo to the Suwannee River. The NHC has also issued storm surge watches along the east coast of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.

Florida officials are urging residents, particularly those living in coastal and low-lying areas, to evacuate immediately before the storm arrives. The situation is becoming increasingly dire, with the state preparing for its largest evacuation since Hurricane Irma in 2017.

As Milton approaches, the NHC is forecasting a turn to the east and then northeast on Tuesday and Wednesday. The storm is expected to pass near or just north of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula before making its way across the eastern Gulf of Mexico and heading towards Florida.

Residents across the state are working to prepare for the storm, with many filling sandbags and stocking up on supplies. The NHC continues to monitor the situation and issue updated forecasts as the storm progresses.
