Tue Oct 08 16:42:11 UTC 2024: ## Sooraj Barjatya Wins National Award for “Uunchai,” Despite Initial Hesitation
**New Delhi, India** – Renowned filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya was awarded the National Film Award for Best Direction on Tuesday for his 2022 film “Uunchai.” This prestigious recognition comes despite Barjatya’s initial reluctance to take on the project.
“Uunchai,” which features an ensemble cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Boman Irani, Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, and Parineeti Chopra, explores a story outside Barjatya’s usual comfort zone. He revealed that the film’s concept had been with him since 2016, but he initially hesitated due to its departure from his studio-bound style. However, the COVID-19 pandemic prompted him to embrace the challenge, and ultimately, Bachchan’s acceptance of the lead role solidified his commitment to the project.
Speaking to Doordarshan, Barjatya praised his cast, calling them a “dream team” and highlighting the smooth shooting experience. He mentioned that they were able to wrap filming by 11 am each day, with minimal retakes thanks to the actors’ seasoned experience.
“Uunchai,” which premiered in theaters in 2022, is now available for streaming on ZEE5 and OTTplay Premium. The film has been widely praised for its heartwarming story and stellar performances, solidifying Barjatya’s reputation as a masterful storyteller.
