**Jaipur:** The Jaipur Police have apprehended a mastermind behind a series of purse snatching incidents in the city, along with his minor accomplice. The alleged criminal, identified as Akash Mehra (20), was apprehended following a chase during which he crashed his motorcycle into a pile of stones, sustaining injuries to his arms and legs.
According to DCP (East) Tejaswini Gautam, Mehra was residing in Malियों की ढाणी Muhaana and was operating his crime spree alongside his underage partner. They used to target women on motorcycles, swiftly snatching their purses.
The police recovered 18 stolen mobile phones and the bike used in the crimes during the arrest. During interrogation, Mehra confessed to carrying out approximately 30-32 such incidents. Further investigations are ongoing and are expected to uncover additional details about the criminal activities.
The arrest comes after a recent surge in purse snatching incidents in the city. A special team was formed to investigate the cases, and CCTV footage from the Gaurav Tower area, where several incidents occurred, was reviewed. The police were able to identify and pursue the suspect, who attempted to escape by speeding away on his motorcycle. During the chase, Mehra lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a stone barrier near the Share Market Exchange Office.
Despite the injuries, Mehra tried to flee on foot but was eventually apprehended by the police. Upon questioning, Mehra revealed his modus operandi, explaining how he would remove valuables like mobile phones and cash from the stolen purses before discarding them.
