Sun Oct 06 13:10:00 UTC 2024: ## India’s Slowest Train: A Journey Through Time and Beauty
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned as India’s slowest train, taking five hours to cover a mere 46 kilometers. However, the journey is anything but ordinary, offering a unique experience through breathtaking landscapes.
Starting in Mettupalayam and ending in Ooty, the train traverses lush tea gardens, dense forests, and rocky hills, passing through numerous tunnels and over 100 bridges. The most captivating scenery unfolds between Mettupalayam and Coonoor, showcasing the splendor of the Nilgiri Hills.
The railway boasts a rich history, proposed in 1854 but only constructed between 1891 and 1908 due to the challenging mountain terrain. Its vintage wooden coaches, painted in a charming blue and cream, exude an old-fashioned charm.
With four wooden coaches offering 72 First Class and 100 Second Class seats, passengers can relax and enjoy the scenic views during the leisurely ride. To accommodate increasing tourist demand, a fourth coach was added in 2016.
Tickets can be booked online through the IRCTC website, and due to the train’s popularity during holidays and weekends, advance booking is recommended to secure a seat.
