Mon Oct 07 18:22:39 UTC 2024: ## E-Cigarette Ads on Instagram Largely Ignore FDA Health Warning Requirements, Study Finds

**Philadelphia, PA** – A new study published in JAMA Open Network reveals that a vast majority of e-cigarette ads on Instagram, a platform popular with young users, fail to comply with FDA health warning requirements. The study, led by Annenberg School for Communication postdoctoral fellow Jiaxi Wu, analyzed over 2,000 posts by companies selling e-cigarettes containing synthetic nicotine, a laboratory-produced alternative to tobacco-derived nicotine.

The researchers found that 87% of the Instagram posts did not include the mandated 20% health warning, which the FDA implemented in 2022. This blatant disregard for regulations is particularly concerning, as synthetic nicotine products are gaining popularity, with flavors like cotton candy and bubblegum appealing to young users.

The study also found that posts with health warnings received significantly fewer comments, suggesting that these warnings might be detrimental to engagement.

“This study highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of existing regulations and further research into the effectiveness of health warnings on social media,” said Dr. Traci Hong, a Boston University Professor of Communications and corresponding author on the study. “The widespread disregard for FDA guidelines, particularly on platforms heavily used by young people, is deeply troubling.”

The study’s authors call for further collaboration between researchers, the FDA, and policymakers to address the increasing use of e-cigarettes, especially among youth. They believe that effectively communicating the health risks associated with these products on social media is crucial to deterring uptake and potential harm.
