Mon Oct 07 14:32:51 UTC 2024: ## Maldives President Seeks India’s Help Amid Looming Debt Crisis

**New Delhi, India** – Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has arrived in New Delhi for a four-day state visit, his first since taking office a year ago. The visit comes as the island nation faces a looming debt crisis, with payments on Chinese loans due and the country’s debt reaching 110% of GDP.

Muizzu, who swept into power on a campaign to reduce India’s influence and strengthen ties with China, has softened his rhetoric ahead of the visit. He has emphasized that he never opposed India and acknowledged the nation’s financial struggles, calling on New Delhi for assistance.

The visit comes after India extended a $50 million lifeline to the Maldives last month to prevent a default on its Islamic bonds. However, analysts warn this may only be a temporary fix, with more significant payments due in the near future.

Discussions during the visit will focus on the Maldives’ economic crisis, including reviewing Indian projects, restarting tourism, and considering the adoption of India’s digital payment platform.

India has already extended two currency swap agreements to the Maldives totaling $400 million and 30 billion rupees to bolster the country’s foreign currency reserves. Additionally, the two leaders discussed a potential free trade agreement and ways for India to support infrastructure and military development in the Maldives.

The Maldives’ debt crisis is a significant concern, with Fitch Ratings estimating the country’s total external debt obligations to reach $557 million by 2025 and exceed $1 billion by 2026. The island nation’s foreign reserves are currently only enough to cover 1.5 months of imports.

The situation highlights the consequences of the Maldives’ efforts to balance its relationship with China and India, with the country now seeking India’s help to navigate its financial difficulties. The visit marks a significant shift in the Maldives’ stance towards India, signaling a potential re-alignment of diplomatic ties amidst the ongoing geopolitical rivalry in the Indian Ocean region.
