Ireland made a strong start in their opening match of the tri-series against South Africa, reaching 100 runs in the first 17 overs. Paul Stirling was the standout performer, reaching a half-century with a well-paced innings.
Stirling and Andy Balbirnie, the Irish captain, put on a solid opening partnership, with Balbirnie providing valuable support. The pair put on 88 runs together before Balbirnie was dismissed by Lizaad Williams for 21 runs.
Stirling continued his aggressive approach, reaching his 50 off 46 balls. He was the dominant partner in the stand, with Balbirnie providing stability. The Irish openers were particularly strong against the spin of Bjorn Fortuin, taking him for several boundaries.
The South African bowling attack was generally accurate but they struggled to contain the flow of runs. The experienced Andile Phehlukwayo had the better of Balbirnie, dismissing the Irish captain with a well-directed delivery that beat the bat.
