Mon Oct 07 10:21:07 UTC 2024: ## Maldives Seeks to Boost Indian Tourism, Extends Olive Branch to India

**New Delhi, India:** Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, currently on a five-day visit to New Delhi, has reiterated his commitment to strengthening ties with India, highlighting the country’s importance as a major source market for Maldivian tourism.

In a joint briefing, President Muizzu expressed his desire to welcome more Indian tourists to the Maldives, which heavily relies on tourism for its economy. He also emphasized the importance of a democratic, prosperous, and resilient Maldives for peace and stability in the Indian Ocean Region, acknowledging India’s crucial role in maritime security due to its geographical proximity.

The visit comes amidst a period of strained relations between the two nations, following derogatory remarks against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi by two Maldivian cabinet ministers last year. The ministers were subsequently removed, but the incident had further complicated bilateral ties.

President Muizzu’s recent shift towards a softer stance, coinciding with economic challenges faced by the Maldives, is seen as a bid to mend relations with India. He invited Prime Minister Modi to undertake a state visit to commemorate the 60th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries next year, highlighting the long-standing ties and shared commitment to peace and development in the region.

“We will work to build a future that only benefits the two countries,” President Muizzu stated, emphasizing the Maldives’ desire to remain a “true friend” to India.
