Mon Oct 07 09:52:48 UTC 2024: ## India and Maldives Strengthen Ties Amidst Past Tensions: Modi Emphasizes ‘Neighborhood First’ Policy
**New Delhi, India:** Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu on Monday, reaffirming India’s commitment to its “Neighborhood First” policy and highlighting the strong ties between the two nations.
The meeting comes after a period of diplomatic tension following last year’s election in the Maldives, where President Muizzu, seen as a pro-China leader, campaigned on an “India Out” platform.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi emphasized India’s role as a “first responder” to the Maldives’ needs, citing instances such as providing Covid vaccines during the pandemic and essential commodities. He also mentioned ongoing projects including the inauguration of an airport, the handover of 700 social housing units, and support for the construction of a new port.
Modi also highlighted the recent completion of a drinking water project benefiting over 30,000 people on 28 Maldivian islands. He further announced discussions for opening consulates in Addu and Bengaluru.
President Muizzu, for his part, reiterated his call for the return of Indian tourists to the Maldives, recognizing its significance for the island nation’s economy. He also expressed his hope for concluding a free trade agreement with India, aiming to attract further investment.
Acknowledging India’s crucial role in the Maldives’ socio-economic development, President Muizzu expressed gratitude for the Rs 30 billion assistance and the US$ 400 million bilateral currency swap agreement, which will address current foreign exchange issues.
In a statement prior to the meeting, President Muizzu assured India that the Maldives would never undermine its security and emphasized their commitment to regional stability.
The meeting marks a significant step towards mending relations between India and the Maldives after a period of strained ties. Both sides appear committed to strengthening cooperation in various fields, including defense, while acknowledging each other’s strategic importance in the Indian Ocean Region.
