**New Delhi, October 5, 2024:** The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has achieved another milestone in its Phase 4 project by completing the construction of an underground tunnel between Chhatarpur and Chhatarpur Mandir stations on the Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor.
The 860-meter long tunnel, part of the 19.343 km underground stretch on the Aerocity-Tughlakabad corridor, was built using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). This marks the completion of the second tunnel in this section, with the first parallel tunnel having been finished on August 21, 2024.
The newly constructed tunnel is located at an average depth of 12 meters and consists of approximately 613 rings with an inner diameter of 5.8 meters. The construction faced several challenges, including relocating a 66 kV electricity line and navigating the TBM under the existing Yellow Line viaduct without disrupting metro train operations.
The tunnel was built using the Earth Pressure Balancing Method (EPBM) technique, which involves a concrete lining made of precast tunnel rings. These rings were cast in a fully mechanized casting yard established in Mundka and were steam cured to achieve rapid strength.
Throughout the construction process, DMRC took all necessary safety precautions, including constant monitoring of ground movements with highly sensitive equipment installed around existing structures. The successful completion of this tunnel marks another step towards the completion of the Phase 4 project, bringing the Delhi Metro closer to expanding its network and improving connectivity in the city.
