Mon Oct 07 18:01:04 UTC 2024: ## “The Princess Diaries” to Return to the Big Screen After 20 Years
**LOS ANGELES -** Get ready to dust off your tiaras, because the beloved early 2000s film “The Princess Diaries” is getting a third installment!
More than two decades after the original film and its sequel “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement,” Disney has announced that “The Princess Diaries 3” is officially in the works.
The news comes after a flurry of announcements for other beloved early 2000s franchises like “Freaky Friday” and “The Devil Wears Prada,” which are also receiving sequels.
“The Princess Diaries 3” will be helmed by Adele Lim, the director behind the R-rated comedy “Joy Ride” and screenwriter for films like “Raya and the Last Dragon” and “Crazy Rich Asians.” Lim expressed her excitement to be bringing the beloved franchise to life, stating: “As a die-hard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core [tenets] of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
Star Anne Hathaway has also confirmed her return to the role of Mia Thermopolis, sharing a video on Instagram with the caption: “Back to Genovia. The fairytale continues.”
The third film will also see the return of Debra Martin Chase, producer of the first two films.
While the original director, Garry Marshall, sadly passed away in 2016, the sequel is expected to feature several familiar faces from the original films, including Mandy Moore, Sandra Oh, and Chris Pine.
There is still uncertainty about whether Julie Andrews, who played Queen Clarisse Renaldi, will be returning. Andrews previously expressed doubt about her involvement, citing her age and the character’s development. However, Hathaway has voiced her commitment to finding a way to bring Andrews back to the project.
The plot details for “The Princess Diaries 3” are still under wraps, but the film is expected to draw inspiration from Meg Cabot’s numerous novels that have expanded the Princess Diaries universe since the release of the second film.
Production for “The Princess Diaries 3” is slated to begin next year, but there is no official release date as yet. Fans will have to wait patiently for further details about the long-awaited sequel.
