Mon Oct 07 09:12:14 UTC 2024: ## Chennai Air Show Turns Deadly: Five Dead, Hundreds Hospitalized Amidst Chaos and Criticism
**Chennai, India:** An Indian Air Force (IAF) air show held in Chennai on Sunday to commemorate the IAF’s 92nd anniversary turned tragic, resulting in five deaths and over 200 hospitalizations. The event, held at Marina Beach, descended into chaos due to overcrowding, inadequate crowd management, and a lack of basic amenities, leading to widespread criticism of the Tamil Nadu government.
Opposition leaders have slammed the ruling DMK government for its alleged negligence and poor planning. AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami accused the administration of failing to manage the massive crowd, citing inadequate police presence, lack of drinking water, and heavy traffic jams, all contributing to the deaths and injuries.
Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai echoed these sentiments, describing the incident as “preventable” and a “complete failure of administration.” He targeted Chief Minister MK Stalin, questioning his ability to organize large-scale events despite hosting other events for his own promotion.
Even Congress MP Karti Chidambaram, an ally of the DMK, expressed concern, tweeting “Spectacle in the Sky. Tragedy on Ground.”
Despite the mounting criticism, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian defended the government, highlighting the medical teams and ambulances deployed for the event. However, AIADMK leader Kovai Sathyan demanded his resignation, alleging “complete mismanagement” and lack of basic necessities at the event.
The air show, which aimed to attract 1.6 million attendees, saw thousands gather along the coastline. Many, particularly the elderly, fainted before the show even began. Emergency workers rushed over 200 people to hospitals with symptoms of dehydration and heat exhaustion.
The tragedy culminated in a chaotic dispersal, with poor traffic management leaving lakhs of people stranded across the city. Roads surrounding Marina Beach were gridlocked, adding to the distress of the already exhausted crowd.
The incident has sparked outrage and calls for accountability, putting the Tamil Nadu government under intense scrutiny for its handling of the event. An investigation into the circumstances leading to the deaths and injuries is likely to be initiated to assess the responsibility and address the shortcomings in crowd management and safety protocols.
