Mon Oct 07 11:12:40 UTC 2024: ## Nobel Prize in Medicine Awarded to American Scientists for MicroRNA Research

**Stockholm, Sweden:** Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun, both American researchers, have been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine for their groundbreaking work on the function of microRNAs after gene regulation.

The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm announced the prestigious prize, recognizing the scientists’ discovery of microRNAs and their role in post-transcriptional regulation, the process of controlling the behavior of genes at the RNA level. This regulation involves the maturation of immature microRNAs, a crucial aspect of cellular function.

Ambros and Ruvkun are celebrated for their pioneering research, which shed light on the complex mechanisms by which microRNAs influence gene expression and contribute to cellular processes, including development and disease.

The two laureates will share the 11 million Swedish kronor ($1.1 million) prize money. The Nobel Prize in Medicine marks the first of the coveted Nobel Prizes, awarded annually in the fields of science, literature, and peace. The remaining prizes will be announced in the coming days.

Established in 1901 according to the will of Swedish dynamite inventor and industrialist Alfred Nobel, the prizes celebrate outstanding achievements in scientific advancement, literary excellence, and contributions to global peace.
