Sat Oct 05 23:10:00 UTC 2024: ## New Walking Trail Opens in Studland, Protecting Wildlife and Offering Stunning Views
**Studland, Dorset:** A popular walking track in Studland has undergone a major upgrade, thanks to a £80,000 grant from the Poole Harbour’s Bird and Recreation Initiative (BARI). The 1.5km path, stretching from Ferry Road to the beach, was previously prone to flooding, making it inaccessible during heavy rain.
The National Trust, responsible for managing the area, has addressed the flooding issues by removing blocked culverts, installing new pipes to drain water, and resurfacing eroded sections. The track now forms part of a signposted circular route, offering walkers an alternative “wildlife-friendly” path.
The new route aims to minimize disturbance to overwintering birds in the sensitive Brand’s Bay area. Poole Harbour is an internationally important site for birds like the turnstone, avocet, and brent goose. These birds, some traveling thousands of miles from Greenland, Siberia, and Iceland, rely on Brand’s Bay for rest, feeding, and recovery.
“We’re asking people to try out this new improved route so that the overwintering birds aren’t disturbed,” said Ria Loveridge of BARI. “Birds see humans and dogs as predators, which can stress them. If you know your dog chases birds, please keep them on a lead.”
David Brown, lead ecologist for the National Trust, emphasized the importance of minimizing disturbance to the birds. “Survival of these birds depends on them spending most of their time in Poole Harbour feeding – but every time birds are scared into flight, they stop feeding and instead need to use up valuable energy stocks,” he explained.
The new circular route leads around Bramble Bush Bay to Jerry’s Point, then inland across the heath, eventually connecting to the upgraded track. Walkers can enjoy stunning views of the harbor shoreline, woodland, sand dunes, and beach.
This project highlights the importance of balancing public access with the protection of vulnerable wildlife. The National Trust and BARI hope the new walking route will offer a fulfilling experience for visitors while ensuring the well-being of the precious birdlife that calls Poole Harbour home.
