Paris, France – French National Team manager Didier Deschamps has announced that Kylian Mbappe will not be included in the squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Israel and Belgium. The decision comes as a result of Mbappe’s ongoing recovery from a thigh injury sustained in a Real Madrid match on September 24th.
While Mbappe was able to make a return to the pitch as a substitute in a Champions League game this week, Deschamps cited concerns over the Real Madrid forward’s fitness and “uncertain” mental state.
“I spoke with Kylian about the situation, which is still uncertain after coming on as a substitute on Wednesday,” Deschamps said in a news conference. “He has a problem which is not serious but he needs treatment to recover properly. I am not here to take risks. That is why Kylian is not here.”
Deschamps also alluded to Mbappe’s mental state during the last international break in September, where France suffered a loss to Italy. “I have no doubt about Kylian’s commitment but he was not in the best condition during the last gathering,” the head coach stated.
This is the first time since November 2013 that a France squad has been named without either Mbappe or Antoine Griezmann, who recently retired from international football. Deschamps expressed gratitude for Griezmann’s contributions and hailed him as “a very good example to follow for young people”.
To fill the void left by Mbappe and Griezmann, Deschamps has called up Christopher Nkunku, Michael Olise, and Bradley Barcola. France will face Israel in Budapest on October 11th before traveling to Brussels for the game against Belgium on October 14th.
