Southampton captain, James Ward-Prowse, has issued a stark warning to his teammates following their embarrassing 3-1 defeat to Bournemouth. The Saints currently sit second from bottom in the Premier League with no wins and just three goals in six matches.
“That first half was simply not acceptable,” Ward-Prowse told BBC Radio Solent. “We let the staff and the fans down. There was no fight, no commitment, and no belief. We let everyone down.”
He highlighted the team’s capitulation after conceding a quick free-kick, leading to a 3-0 deficit, saying it echoed their performance against Manchester United.
“We started well, but then we sunk,” he said. “Going 3-0 down in the Premier League, you are asking for a lot.”
Ward-Prowse stressed the need for introspection and a change in attitude, urging his teammates to look in the mirror and work harder. “We have to fight for three points,” he said. “The fans deserve to see that fight every week. There is no other option.”
The captain emphasized the importance of basic fundamentals: “You can talk about tactics all you want, but you have to fight and earn the right to play. Whether you are going to go long or try and play football, you have to earn the right or you’ve got no chance in this league – and we didn’t.”
