Sat Oct 05 03:12:00 UTC 2024: ## India Stumbles in T20 World Cup Opener, Losing to New Zealand by 58 Runs

Dubai, UAE: The Indian Women’s Cricket Team suffered a disappointing start to their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, losing their opening match against New Zealand by a crushing 58 runs at the Dubai International Stadium on Friday.

The team, despite boasting batting depth, struggled to cope with New Zealand’s aggressive approach, particularly in the powerplay. The Indian top order, featuring Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana, and Harmanpreet Kaur, faltered, managing only 29 runs before being dismissed.

In contrast, New Zealand’s Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer powered the White Ferns to a strong start with 55 runs in the powerplay, demonstrating a clear intent to attack the bowling.

India’s lack of partnerships and soft dismissals proved costly, with the 17-run stand between Harmanpreet and Smriti being the best of a poor batting display. Harmanpreet’s top score of 15 highlighted the team’s struggles.

India’s fielding also proved subpar, leaking extra runs through sloppy play and misdirected bowling. Richa Ghosh’s dropped catch of Bates towards the end of the powerplay further exemplified the team’s lack of focus.

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine’s unbeaten 57 off 36 balls, featuring seven boundaries, proved to be the decisive factor. Devine’s composed knock and Bates’ impressive footwork exposed India’s lack of match time, having last played competitively in July.

This loss, coming after a two-month break from international competition, has cast a shadow over India’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals. The team now faces a tough task of regrouping and bouncing back against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in their remaining group matches to keep their tournament hopes alive.
