**Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo** – A tragic boat accident in Lake Kivu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, has claimed the lives of at least 78 people. The boat, carrying over 278 passengers, capsized on Thursday, according to local officials.

Governor Jean-Jacques Mupusi of South Kivu province confirmed the death toll, stating that the number could rise as rescue operations continue. The overcrowded vessel sank shortly after departing from Kituku port, just a few meters from shore. It was en route from Minova in South Kivu to Goma in North Kivu.

Eyewitnesses reported the boat was severely overloaded, a common issue that has led to numerous fatal boat accidents in the region. This incident follows a string of similar tragedies, including the sinking of a boat near the capital Kinshasa in June, killing 80 passengers, and another incident in Lake Mai-Ndombe in January that resulted in 22 deaths.

President Felix Tshisekedi expressed his condolences and ordered an investigation into the cause of the accident, aiming to prevent similar disasters in the future. He also directed officials to provide immediate assistance to those affected by the tragedy.

The DRC faces challenges in transportation infrastructure, with water travel often a primary mode of transport, especially in remote areas. This latest accident highlights the need for stricter safety regulations and enforcement to prevent further loss of life.
