A new study published in VoxEU reveals a surprising outcome of Twitter’s attempt to curb misinformation spread ahead of the 2020 US presidential election. While the platform aimed to slow the spread of false information by modifying the retweet button, the policy inadvertently had a greater impact on the sharing of news from left-wing outlets compared to right-wing outlets.
The research, conducted by Daniel Ershov and Juan S. Morales, analyzed data from popular US news outlets and found that the change in the retweet button resulted in a significant decline in news sharing overall, with an average reduction of over 15%. However, the study identified a stark ideological disparity: retweets for left-wing outlets fell by around 20%, while those for right-wing outlets dropped by only 5%.
This finding suggests that conservative news-sharing users proved less susceptible to Twitter’s “nudge” – the subtle change intended to encourage users to consider the content they share more carefully. The authors argue that conservatives were more likely to ignore the platform’s prompt and continue sharing content as before, suggesting a higher level of persistence in disseminating information.
Furthermore, the study explored the impact of the retweet button change on web traffic to the news outlets’ websites. The findings revealed that traffic from Twitter to the websites of left-leaning outlets fell more significantly than that of right-leaning outlets, highlighting the potential for platform policies to disproportionately affect different political ideologies.
The study’s conclusions underscore the need for social media platforms to carefully consider the potential unintended consequences of their interventions, particularly when attempting to manage the flow of information. The authors call for greater collaboration between social scientists, platforms, and policymakers to analyze and understand the nuances of user behavior and how different interventions may impact diverse user groups.
The study’s findings raise concerns about the potential for social media platforms to inadvertently contribute to political polarization and the spread of misinformation. As platforms continue to grapple with the challenges of content moderation, it is critical to ensure that interventions are designed and implemented in a way that promotes a balanced and informed public discourse.
