Sat Oct 05 14:47:43 UTC 2024: ## New Zealand Dominate India in Thrilling WT20WC Opener
Dubai – New Zealand delivered a commanding performance in their opening match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, dismantling India by 58 runs in a one-sided encounter at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Sophie Devine’s brilliant 57* off 43 balls led New Zealand to a tournament-high 160/4, a total that proved insurmountable for India. The Indian batting order struggled to cope with the Kiwi bowlers, especially Rosemary Mair who claimed 4/19, and Lea Tahuhu who bagged 3/15.
Early wickets by Eden Carson, who removed both openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana, set the tone for a disappointing Indian innings. Despite Harmanpreet Kaur’s brief fightback, the wickets continued to fall, and India eventually succumbed to a paltry 102 all out.
New Zealand’s opening partnership of 55 runs in the powerplay set the foundation for their victory. Suzie Bates, despite a dropped catch, contributed 27 runs before being dismissed by Arundhati Reddy. Georgia Plimmer also made a crucial contribution with a quickfire 34 runs.
While India managed a brief recovery through Jemimah Rodrigues (13), the loss of key wickets throughout the innings ultimately proved too much to overcome. The middle order failed to deliver the required momentum, leaving the tail exposed, and handing New Zealand a comfortable victory.
This emphatic win puts New Zealand in a strong position in Group A, where they are joined by defending champions Australia, Asia Cup winners Sri Lanka, and opening-day victors Pakistan. Both New Zealand and India are seeking their first Women’s T20 World Cup title.
