Sat Oct 05 16:10:10 UTC 2024: ## Southampton Suffer Humiliating Defeat to Bournemouth, Martin Blasts Lack of Fight
Southampton suffered a heavy 3-1 defeat to south-coast rivals Bournemouth on Monday, leaving manager Russell Martin fuming over his side’s lack of fighting spirit.
Bournemouth dominated the first half, scoring three unanswered goals to leave Southampton reeling. Despite a goal from Taylor Harwood-Bellis early in the second half, the Saints failed to mount a serious comeback.
“We were soft,” Martin lamented after the game. “The problem is, if you don’t want to run and fight properly, make contact, take things personally, then it’s going to be a problem. We didn’t come out of the ball at all in the first half.”
Southampton, who remain in 19th place with just one point from six games, struggled to find cohesion throughout the match. “We looked like we were unprepared for Bournemouth,” admitted Martin. “I made it clear how they play, but it wasn’t enough. Considering the work we’ve done, it’s crazy.”
Despite his frustration, Martin remains committed to his players. “I will never blame the group,” he stressed. “We are together. But I didn’t like what I saw. I was hurt by the lack of spirit and fight.”
The manager acknowledged the responsibility lies with him to instill a stronger mentality within the team. “It’s always on the leader, and that’s my problem to sort out,” he stated.
Southampton will need to find a way to rediscover their fight quickly if they are to avoid another season battling relegation.
