Fri Oct 04 21:47:14 UTC 2024: ## Maharashtra Assembly Deputy Speaker and Legislators Protest Dhangar Quota Inclusion with Dramatic Stunt
**Mumbai, India** – In a dramatic protest on Friday afternoon, Maharashtra Assembly Deputy Speaker Narhari Zirwal and at least two tribal legislators jumped from the third floor of the Mantralaya building, landing safely on safety nets. The legislators were protesting the inclusion of the Dhangar community in the quota for tribals.
The Dhangar community, a group of shepherds from western Maharashtra and Marathwada, has been demanding inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. They argue that the Centre’s database incorrectly lists them as “Dhangad” instead of “Dhangar,” which is recognized as part of the STs. Currently, Dhangars are classified as Nomadic Tribes.
The protest comes amidst ongoing tensions over the issue. Earlier this month, tribal groups in Gondia protested against the proposed inclusion, claiming it would be an injustice to genuine tribals. Meanwhile, state minister Shambhuraj Desai announced the formation of a panel to investigate the connection between “Dhangar” and “Dhangad.”
The incident highlights the growing controversy surrounding the Dhangar reservation demand, with various groups expressing strong opinions on the issue. The Maharashtra government is now facing pressure to resolve the situation and address the concerns of all parties involved.
