**Montreal, Canada** – A new study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine highlights the critical importance of early access to multidisciplinary care for Olympic athletes suffering from concussions. Researchers at the Institut national du sport du Québec, a Canadian national Olympic and Paralympic training center, analyzed data from 133 Olympic athletes who experienced at least one concussion over a four-year period.
The study found that Olympic athletes, due to their unique travel demands and less centralized support compared to professional or collegiate athletes, often face longer recovery times after concussion. The median return to sport time for Olympic athletes in the study was 34 days, significantly longer than the average recovery time reported for other groups of athletes.
However, the study also demonstrated a clear benefit of early access to multidisciplinary care. Athletes who received care within 7 days of their injury returned to training an average of 19 days sooner than those who received care later. The study also found a correlation between the number and severity of initial symptoms and the time to return to sport. Additionally, female athletes were found to recover more slowly if they received care later.
The findings emphasize the need for sports authorities and federations to prioritize and implement effective care systems, especially during international competitions, to ensure timely and comprehensive treatment for Olympic athletes suffering from concussion.
Lead researcher Thomas Romeas stressed the urgency of addressing the issue, stating that “This study highlights the importance of early access to care for Olympic athletes. It is essential that sports authorities and federations implement effective care systems, particularly during international competitions, to ensure rapid and optimal recovery for Olympians.”
This research provides valuable insight into the specific needs of Olympic athletes and emphasizes the importance of tailoring concussion management strategies to address the unique challenges faced by this unique population.
