Fri Oct 04 06:22:02 UTC 2024: ## Bird Flu Outbreak Kills Dozens of Tigers in Vietnam

**HANOI, VIETNAM** – A devastating bird flu outbreak has killed over a dozen tigers at a zoo in southern Vietnam, with officials confirming the presence of the H5N1 virus. The tigers, including several cubs, succumbed to the illness within two days, exhibiting symptoms of weakness and loss of appetite.

The Vuon Xoai zoo in Bien Hoa city suspects the outbreak originated from raw chicken fed to the animals, purchased from nearby farms. The bodies of the deceased tigers, weighing between 20 and 265 pounds, were incinerated and buried on the premises.

Over 20 additional tigers are currently being isolated and monitored for signs of the virus. The zoo, home to approximately 3,000 animals, remains open. Fortunately, the 30 staff members who cared for the tigers tested negative for bird flu.

This incident follows a similar outbreak in September at a zoo in Long An province, where 27 tigers and three lions died within a week.

The alarming trend has sparked concerns about the dangers of keeping wild animals in captivity. PETA Senior Vice President Jason Baker issued a statement, emphasizing the “tragic” consequences of such practices, which he argues not only threaten the well-being of animals but also increase the risk of future pandemics.

Health officials in the United States are also grappling with bird flu, with two dairy workers in California recently testing positive for the virus, bringing the total number of human cases in 2024 to 16.

While bird flu has claimed hundreds of lives globally, the vast majority of cases involve direct contact with infected birds. This latest outbreak serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by the virus and the need for vigilance in controlling its spread.
