The Dallas Cowboys will face a monumental challenge in Pittsburgh this Sunday, facing the 3-1 Steelers with a depleted roster. Star linebacker Micah Parsons is out with an ankle injury, joining defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, who was placed on injured reserve with a significant foot injury.
Further compounding the Cowboys’ woes, cornerback Trevon Diggs is nursing an ankle injury and did not practice on Friday. Linebacker Marist Liufau (quad) and cornerback Caelen Carson (shoulder) are also questionable heading into Week 5.
The Cowboys, currently 2-2, were already facing a tough matchup against the Steelers, who are led by the surprising emergence of quarterback Justin Fields. The former Chicago Bear, acquired in the offseason as the Steelers traded for Russell Wilson, has taken the NFL by storm.
“Justin [has] won the team over,” Parsons said of Fields. “Justin is really, really good. … I’m glad that the Steelers and Mike Tomlin [have] been able to get his confidence back because the Bears probably stripped him of it. They kinda said, ‘We don’t need you anymore. You’re less valuable.’ They kinda just shipped him off. I thought the Bears should’ve kept him.”
Fields’ success presents a tough dilemma for Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin as Wilson is still listed as questionable for Week 5. Tomlin will have to decide whether to stick with the hot hand in Fields or return to the veteran Wilson, who is still recovering from a calf injury.
With a struggling offense and a depleted defense, the Cowboys face an uphill battle against a surging Steelers team in a game that could have major implications for both teams’ playoff hopes.
